Peach Pit Theology

Several weeks ago, I was leaving the house very early in the morning. There was a fine mist in the air, and daylight was just beginning to creep into the morning. As I came down my back stairs, I heard a familiar and loud snort. I say familiar, because I have heard this snort too often as I've been learning to be a deer hunter. When you hear this snort, it means you've been busted and you most likely will never see other deer again all day. However, on this morning, this snort did not discourage me, but rather it encouraged me.

You see, the reason I was leaving so early that morning was in order to attend the SBCV's Church Planter Network meeting in Richmond. This early morning encounter with three white-tail deer in my yard, served as a reminder as to why were investigating church planting. I've learned something from living in the country, deer are the best indicator of when something is ripe for the picking. We have several fruit trees in our yard, and the deer are always able to harvest them at just the right time. This particular morning they were feasting on peaches. In fact, I have hundereds of pristine peach pits to show for their efforts.

As I watched them scamper off, the verse came to me, "The harvest is plentiful, it is the laborers that are few." Why were the deer able to take my harvest of peaches? Because no laborers went to pick them that is why. Of course we could have picked the peaches ourselves, but we're just not into picking and canning peaches I guess. I invited a neighbor to come and pick all she wanted, but they did not come. So the harvest of peaches that was before us, was taken by a poacher.

As we were praying about and investigating church planting in Virginia Beach, I realized that morning, there is a plentiful, spiritual harvest of souls, the problems is there are so few laborers. I thank the Lord Jesus that He used the snort of a deer and a clean peach pit to make me understand the necessity of going into God's harvest. I pray will be obedient and go out and see the fields are indeed white unto harvest!
