I'm normally not the type who likes to put bumper stickers on my car, but recently I've seen one I want. It simply states, "I Love Jet Noise", except the word for love is represented by a large red heart. The wonderful thing about bumper stickers is how they can say so much, in such a small space. Whoever has one of these stickers is showing his or her support for the myriad of flights in and out of Naval Air Station Oceana. If you've never been in the vicinity of an FA-18 Hornet as it is either taking off or landing, you cannot fully appreciate the amount of noise they make. Some people do not like it at all, but me, I love it!
I love it because of the shear power you can feel. We now live close enough to NAS Oceana that we have experienced many flights going directly over our house, and the noise from the engines can rattle you to your bones. But I also love it for what it represents. This sound is the sound of freedom! Because there are men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line, not just in a jet aircraft, we have the freedoms we enjoy today.
However, there is something I have learned about jet noise, you get used to it. Before too long, you hear the roar of the jets as just background noise and you pay less and less attention to it. I'm afraid we are like that in our spiritual lives. We know there are lots of lost people around us. People who need Jesus Christ, but after a while we just treat them like jet noise. They are just part of the background of our lives, and we pay less and less attention to them. My prayer is that every time I hear jet noise, I'll be reminded of why we moved here.
I began a sermon series last night called, "I Love Jet Noise." I will be preaching at our sponsoring church, Virginia Beach Beacon Baptist Church, for the month of March and into April. The pastor of VBBBC is not only being very generous in sharing his pulpit over the next month and a half, but he is also being very generous with encouraging his people to come and join our new church plant. VBBBC is not a large church, but it is one with a large vision of reaching people for the Kingdom of God. Pastor Gordon is believing that for every person who leaves VBBBC to be part of Harvest Fellowship, that God will provide double in return. I believe God will do this as well, and I am asking you to pray for the same.
If you are in the Virginia Beach area on a Sunday, come and hear the rest of this sermon series at 5:30 PM:
2301 Newstead Dr.

Take care and God Bless!
I hope to do a better job of updating this blog on a weekly basis, so please keep in touch.
