I saw a bumper sticker today which said, "COEXIST". However, instead of using the letters from the alphabet, this word was spelled using the symbols of all the world's major religions. I can't remember which symbols replaced which letters except for the last one. They made the "T" using the cross. I had the urge to ask the driver what she understood this slogan to mean. The meaning is pretty obvious to me.
This slogan is basically saying that all religions are the same, and that no one religion is better than the other. They all contain the truth, so they should all be equally embraced. On the surface this sounds very reasonable and humble, but in reality this is a completely illogical and prideful statement. First, if all religions are the same, then does this mean that the religions which still advocate child sacrifice are to be equally embraced? Second, it is a prideful statement to sit in judgment of all the worlds religions, and make yourself the arbiter of what is acceptable religion.
Truth by its very defintion is very narrow. Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by Me." (John 14:6) While we must show true tolerance for other faiths, this does not mean that we must accept them as equally true.
