"You Can't Take It With You," is the title of a Frank Capra movie from 1938. Of course it is a story of a rich, powerful man who will stop at nothing to get want he wants. However, his son (Jimmy Stewart) falls in love with a common girl, and as a result, the two families' different values collide. In the end, the rich man learns there is more to life than riches, and he gives his blessing on the two young love birds marriage.
As I watched this movie I was struck by the amazing similarity with today's society. People still believe riches will bring them happiness and joy, but in the end, as the movie title reminds us, you can't take it with you. The only thing we can take into eternity with us is our love for God and His people. In 1 Cor. 13:13 it says, "Now faith, hope, and love abide these three, but the greatest of these is love." The reason love is the greatest is because, one day our faith and hope will be fulfilled completely in heaven and we won't need them anymore. We will not need faith, because we will be able see all that God promised. We will not need hope, because all that we hoped for on earth is satisfied in Christ. However, what we can continue to do is love, and even love more fully.
So what are you planning on taking to your grave?
